Go North! Activities

Recently we began a fun new learning experience through a program called GoNorth!  In a nutshell, the program follows a team of science explorers and their Husky Dogs as they travel 1700 miles.  Throughout their journey they discover and learn about the natives of the land, the weather, the ecology and so much more.  There are many lessons for the children to learn and each lesson can be adjusted for any age group.

There are several families we know who are also participating in the GoNorth! activities.  We do several lessons at home on our own and then get together for some fun group learning experiences.

The first activity the kids did together was learning about how to build a sturdy structure that would withstand the mighty Artic weather.

Then they studied the tents that the scientist explorers stay in when they travel.  The tents are only 6'X8' and that is for two people to sleep in!  So the kids measured out the correct size and then laid down to see how it would feel to live in a space that size for four months!

Another activity they did was soap carving.  This came after a brief lesson on how the Inuit people make soap-stone carvings.  Soap was a very appropriate substitute for us and the kids loved it!

The other activity we did was to tie up the children on a dog-line and have them learn the commands that the dogs learn.  They took turns being the lead dog, the team dogs and the musher.  They had so much fun!  I wish I had a picture or video of that activity but I didn't get one :-(
